Eminem on the road to Recovery

24 Jun

Many will agree that Slim Shady’s last album was very lackluster, missing that certain “pizzaz” characteristic of his other work.  Allow Em to reintroduce himself with Recovery, his seventh studio album.  Marshall Mathers opens with “Cold Wind Blows”, a solid but ultimately forgettable song.  The real music gets kicked off with “Talkin 2 Myself”. Eminem touches on topics most emcees would avoid including jealousy, drug abuse, and regret.  He voices his apologies for Relapse (2009), his last composition, and even Encore (2004), an overall success for the rapper.

It’s different them last two albums didn’t count
Encore I was on drugs, Relapse I was flushing em out
I’ve come up to make it up to you no more fucking around
I’ve got something to prove to fans I feel like I let em down

It’s nice to know that he took the time to not only read, but take to heart, the poor reviews on his last set of tracks.  Another track to rock out to is “Won’t Back Down”, a collaboration with fellow rebel Pink.  Pink’s raspy tone provides the chorus on this song that really put’s Eminem’s lyrics on display.  Mr. Mathers flows primarily over simple drum and cymbal beat, allowing listeners to comprehend his rhymes.  Always the jokester, Eminem doesn’t miss the chance to poke fun at himself in “W.T.P.”  This fun song is an acronym for White Trash Party (I’ll leave it at that).

Another track that really shines on Recovery is “Not Afraid”.  The first single released, this song is more uplifting and has a really nice chorus.  The recent video that accompanies it is well-shot and gives the viewer a glimpse of the now peroxide-free rapper.

I could continue talking about this CD for a while, but it’s way more fun to let you guys go out and get it.  It’s a great album to make up for his less intriguing release from a year ago.
